It has been far too long

I have been flat out neglecting my blog for far too long. There is so much going on personally and professionally. I guess once you stop something and definitely is hard to pick it back up again. Well, I going to try and do better moving forward.

On the personal side, my health is better. I had a scare with my PSA levels, but my next 3 month check, showed what it should be. Scare gone! Since cancer has been a problem with me the passed year or so – it was time to have my skin looked at again. Well, another melanoma and a few basal cell carcinomas. All removed! I am hoping that this is all I ever get, have or have to deal with. I keep up to date on my scans and testing – just in case.

Professionally speaking, I took on the role of Team Lead at my high school security job. Had to hire 4 new people. Spent time over the summer, working on cleaning up and painting the office. I dusted off much of the tools and training that I have received over the years. The 90 Day Plan; Team Processes and Procedures and 7 Tough Questions to Help Assess Your Teams Teamwork were all big helps to get me thinking and provided a framework for my actions moving forward.

Changes were going to come. Some were happening to us, as COVID19 and new restrictions would change much of our role. Others would come from the initial 90 Day Plan and actions that needed to be taken.

COVID19 issues had school not starting up as planned. Our school is one that is waiting to start in student instruction until 10/13. After fall break, students will be in the building. I used my background of working at Intel to help out the administrative team work on risk mitigation strategies and developing plans to address what is needed. Things are done, but I truly don’t feel completely comfortable with how school is going to work and keep everyone safe. Masks, social distancing and the like – are something that I have yet to see truly work in a high school or college setting. Time will tell!

The team as a well, has welcomed much of the planning and changes that are being proposed. Since we were getting increased requirements of our jobs, I used a simple RED, YELLOW and GREEN to all of the tasks were are charted to accomplish. I had the team insure that everything was listed and asked them for some items that could stop moving forward. Many of the tasks that the team felt strongly about stopping – we were able to stop. Of course, they were replaced with others, but overall the team is happy.

With the downtime of no students, we were able to train the new people. We were able to keep focus on improvements. We focused on ourselves as a team. Spending time with each other to help with teamwork. We also implemented electronic tools to help each of us with overtime and overall data/document repository.

Overall I feel good. It was fun to get back in the team leadership side. I am hoping that the team will continue to grow and develop over the school year. Right now, we are in a very good space. Students will be back on 10/13 – the testing of the changes will start to happen. We will have to be flexible and adapt quickly if we are to accomplish the goal of keeping the students and staff safe and secure.
