I was in a book store the other day. I know a book store, really. I happened to wonder over to the business books section to just look at titles and such. It is truly amazing to see the number of books on leadership. They all have a piece of a recipe to be a great leader… From looking at shelves, I can safely say, I have read many of them. What is missing is the not to do section! You know the book that is written on if you have these traits – you are going to suck at being a leader.. We shall call them “Bosshole” as written previously.
This got me to think about those traits that I have seen that truly make that “supposed” leader truly horrible. In no particular order –
- Belittling and condescending communication to (and about) your team.
- Not empowering your team to succeed.
- Not providing management with the authority to perform their jobs.
- Using threats with team.
- Standing over your team while they are working on a situation or problem.
- Making examples of folks in front of your team.
- Not setting a clear vision.
- Unable to take or improve from criticism.
- Disrespect for your team.
- Using fear tactics to motivate your team.
Stopping at 10 was difficult. I know I could have gone on. What are some of the bad traits that you have seen in a “supposed” leader?
