From Disappointment – Should Come Fuel

31417151_sI have yet to meet anyone that has never had a disappointment in their life. Something like not getting that job or promotion that you really wanted. How about that league championship? Maybe it was finishing up with a 4.0 in school? If you set goals right, you will have some disappointments. We all have them either personally or professionally (or both).

How we react is the key! Look at any great professional athlete and you will hear about how they used disappointment to fuel their championship run the next year. For you Jordan fans, he was cut by his high school coach. We all know how that ended up. Lebron James made sure that he got the necessary fuel and help to get his first championship and then took it to Cleveland to win one for his home town. I have had colleagues that have missed out on a promo or new job. They went out and improved their skills and added items to their toolbox that made them a better choice the next time around.

One thing that is very important about getting that fuel from that disappointment is they never blamed others. They never focused on making excuses or have excuses made for them. All to often these days, we get to witness excuses or lack of personal responsibility or accountability as the norm. Ask any teacher today, “what is the biggest change now over what was back in the day?” I will answer it for them… Back in the day, the teacher was always right, even when there maybe a hint of they were wrong. Today, it is the teachers fault for the students failure. Parents don’t usually blame their child for not getting a good grade. Their first reaction is it is the teachers fault. Until they actually go in and sit with the teacher to understand the complete story.

Athletes are like student in many ways… They each have to put the work in to accomplish their goals that they have set forth. They have coaches or teachers to help but it takes most of the work falls onto them. Many athletes will get additional support for a nutritionist, life coach or whatever. For students that usually is their parents. That support system is there to help monitor and insure the work  is continuing to function in the right way toward the goals that are set.

So, the next time you have a disappointment, look inside and look for that fuel that will help you to achieve your goals.
