Do Your Job slogan has been around! It is something that the New England Patriots use all the time. It has had some #hashtags in the past… It is time to bring it back out. Especially, for those of us in Arizona that have a governor and state legislature that consistently forget to do their job.
We all have our hot buttons… Mine is like many others. It centers on education! Our states budget plan is again making big cuts in education. Why? Well, we want to continue to rank dead last in public school spending per student.
Recently, our governor Doug Ducey’s budget had an additional $21M cut from 2016 budget. Why? Well, they did put a proposal in place to increase spending for prisons of $24M. My sarcasm says, “they must be planning ahead for the under-educated individuals that will need a place to live.”
We have a new Prop123 to vote on in May. It is to change the funding model from land sales to increase the funding given to education. This is something to help the state provide court order funding. Or recovering for past sins in lack of funding. Are they counting on that money to help with this years continued cuts. Seems like a big shell game.
I am not a fan of throwing money at a problem. I can definitely say that if you continue to decrease your spending in an area – that area will not get better. I do have a potential solution to help with restructuring your cost model… Here it is – We decided to stop Common Core. Costly model that the federal government gave plenty of dollars to implement. Our AZ folks felt we could do it better – I guess. Here comes the budget fix – stop all required testing. Stop spending money on purchasing testing services. Stop spending money on people writing test questions. Stop spending money on trying to figure out if the test is good or bad. Stop spending money on trying to figure out when to retain students from questionable testing standards and procedures. What is the true dollar amount that will be saved from that? Just let me know…

During governor Ducey’s run for office – he said he will fix funding for education. We are still waiting. It is time to #DoYourJob! This goes for @AZHouseGOP and @AZSenateGOP… These blank promise should be remembered when re-election time rolls around.
