Watching Motivation or Manipulation?

46243660_sHave you ever sat back and watched your manager get the team going? Was he/she a motivator or manipulator? Is it a problem using one or the other?

If you are a manager, which are you, “a motivator or manipulator?”

I was discussing this with a group of managers the other day. I asked them that basic question and got what I thought would be the answer they would say… I was not surprised by the answers… “Motivator, of course.” ” “Being a manipulator is wrong.” One particular manager did not answer the question. He sat there thinking. I asked him what he thought of the question. He answer was, “I am not sure. I think I have used both methods over the my career.”

Many think that using manipulator is a negative. When thinking back, I can say that some really outstanding results happened when the manager used manipulation. Some would say that the media manipulators their audience. Some would also say that Donald Trump is manipulating the American people with his form of running for the Republican nomination.

When I think of the differences between motivation and manipulation there are a couple of strong points.

  1. Motivation is believed to be more centered on benefiting those being motivated. Usually with respect for values and intention with an open sharing of all information with all involved. Whereas manipulation is more self-serving. Usually show  no respect for the values and intentions of those being manipulated. Comes across as deceit as complete disclosure of information rarely happens.
  2. Motivation is more about the influence rather than control. Being viewed a more of a long-term solution. Making manipulation a more short term results oriented approach. The manager is really using his control over his people.

Thinking back on our discussion, I was glad that one manager was not afraid to say, I think I have done both. Looking back on my career, I know I can point to examples that I did manipulate. Not overly happy with doing that. But, given the short time line that I was given… I chose to use my control and monitor closer than normal to get the results that needed to happen. Manipulating your team or individuals is a big hit to trust. I know it, because when I am getting manipulated, I lose some trust in that person.  Afterwards, I discussed with my team the “why’s and how comes.” I also told me team that this approach is not the norm of operation. It is critical to keep your team in your thoughts and worries.

For me… Things can be manipulated! People should be motivated.
