Father of the Groom Speech

Saturday, November 16th was a special day for my family and I; our youngest got married. My wife informed me that I would be giving a “father of the groom” speech. So, I thought I would post it, for all the future dads that will be in the same boat…

Good evening everyone. On behalf of my wife Randi and I, I would like to also welcome everyone that traveled near and far. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome those that could not be here – those that are looking down at us today.  Thank you for coming to this special day for Brandon and Brittany (and their families)!

Since this is my first father of the groom speech. What do you do? – Google it! The experts say that a great father of the groom speech should have a welcome (did that), tell a story and provide some sage advice.

My family provided some addition advice… Keep it short and most importantly don’t embarrass us!

So, telling a story is probably out of the question. I will share, when I was preparing for this speech and the rehearsal dinner, I spent hours looking over photos of both of them. I have to say, I did tear up a few times. I have watched Brandon and Brittany together for a while now. They have a very special bond. I have seen Brandon grow so much from their relationship. They are good together. I am very proud of them!

I would like to take this opportunity to formally welcome Brittany to our family!

Now for the sage advice – I can only speak from my experiences… Randi and I have been married for over 32 years. Marriage is hard work but the most rewarding work that you will ever do. Old married couples know that the secret of a successful marriage is patience, tolerance and forgiveness. Having a bad memory doesn’t hurt, except on birthdays and anniversaries. Brandon, always try to get the last word in for any argument or disagreement – two simple words – yes dear!

My final duty and very great privilege is to propose a toast to our son and new daughter-in law.  So would you please join me in a toast to the bride and groom!

Here’s to the future, for all that you look forward to together.
