Black Friday Fired Up!

For the past two years on Black Friday, I have worked as an associate for Dick’s Sporting Goods in the golf department. My first year was my first day on the job… So, I had no clue what to expect or what to really do. I was put into the fire… This time around I was better prepared. So, I thought!

I was scheduled to come in 30 minutes before the store opens. Get your Sports Matters tee-shirt. Clock in and get your area prepared… When I got there – there were people around waiting in-line. People take their door buster deals seriously!

Once opened, you have no time for to slow down. You are greeting customers, helping them find their way to products in your department or another department. I wish I had a nickel for every time I gave directions to the restroom. I have dreams about – just past the second stone pillar, in camping, turn left and in the back corner…

For the golf team of associates, I decided that we would make a challenge for who is going to sell or process the most door buster items! The old guy or the one of the two much younger guys… Well, the old guy ruled the day!

Getting people fired up to do their job well and make a game of it! I used to do this a lot when I was managing my teams. Set up special goals in order to do something different and get better results. This time – it was a great way to turn a bad situation, working on Thanksgiving evening, into a positive. It was fun to get each other fired up to do more. To help out more customers, we even extended the fun to everything we did. We tracked other departments sales that we did. We just had fun!
