Having a break is awesome, but the break ends. Very soon, for some students, school will be starting back up.
For parents, this time is a welcome sight. Getting the kids back into their normal school routine is huge. There are some parents who this year will be a bit worried. If you have a freshman going into high school, that can be a bit of a challenge. Especially if your student is the oldest. Now, if you have a graduating senior, here comes the excitement and worry.
The areas that worried me the most in both cases were:
- For my freshmen students:
- Are they going to enjoy high school?
- Is their schedule set up for success later on?
- Honors and advanced classes vs on level?
- Do they know what they want to do in life? This may be a bit early for a solid answer, but having an idea will help you and them make sure that they are setting up for success later on.
Worry is a good thing. I would strongly recommend that you set up a regular review with your student. Going over your questions and fears. Don’t accept that everything is ok.
- For my senior students:
- Do they know what they want to do moving forward after high school?
- If going to college, what major is best and which college to attend?
- How are you going to pay for continued education (either college or trade school)?
The path has been around for many years, but the requirements and what works change. What I did back in the day has changed. What I help with my students has changed. What I did at the high school I worked at changed each year I was there. Staying on top of those changes is where I can help you.
