There are numerous aspects to consider. How does one mold themselves according to their guiding principles? These guiding principles have distinguished me from others. They serve as my compass, the guiding standards by which I evaluate myself. Through my work experiences and observations of others, I have refined these principles over time.
Here are the 3 things that are central to me:
- Be a problem solver! Cultivating a mindset that embraces challenges and actively seeks solutions is crucial, rather than solely relying on static knowledge. Employers value individuals who possess critical thinking abilities, can adapt to new situations, and create innovative solutions. In our fast-changing world, these competencies are essential. I’ve observed a noticeable decline in problem-solving skills among young people. As a college and career counselor, the trend is clear. Students often approach with a problem, not seeking guidance but the solution itself. When I propose using problem-solving skills to guide them towards a potential solution, many find it challenging. This approach often concludes our interaction. However, those students who engage in the process tend to have more interactions with me, and I am confident in their future success.
- Do good work! Do meaningful work! When working with my team or students, I aim for them to consider one question: “Will you sign your name on your work?” If they take pride in that, the work becomes rewarding. In the competitive landscape of today’s job market, merely meeting expectations is not enough. It’s about exceeding them, showing a dedication to excellence, and constantly seeking improvement. Whether as an entrepreneur starting a new venture or an employee ascending the corporate ranks, it’s the quest for excellence in your work that distinguishes you.
- Be a good person! Being a good person transcends mere rule-following; it’s about embodying values like honesty, empathy, and respect in every facet of life. These traits build trust and foster collaboration, contributing to a positive and inclusive atmosphere. Success isn’t solely measured by personal gains but also by the influence we exert on others and the legacy we establish. Facing reality, the perception of goodness in today’s world has shifted, often seen as a vulnerability rather than a strength. Upholding a strong moral compass is crucial. I have a tattoo on my arm that has garnered many compliments. The artist executed it beautifully. When asked about its significance, I highlight three aspects: firstly, it symbolizes my passion for travel; secondly, it honors Italy, my favorite destination; and thirdly, it signifies the importance of maintaining a moral compass, not just in travel but in life.

Being clear about them and consistently keeping them in mind can steer us toward our desired outcomes and contribute to our happiness.
