Drivers – Older Better?

Apr08

Ever get a speeding ticket? Had a traffic violation? Anything that made you take a defensive driving course. Well, I have and it was just completed this week. So, this one is fresh in my mind. I took mine – on line… It is a wonderful thing to sit down and complete this course in your own home, without having to attend a weekend session. Not that attending a weekend session is a bad thing. It is the weekend and you have to see other people…. They are wondering what you did to have to go to class (and you are probably thinking the same thing). Enough about that, this post really is about something that I think is important – when and how to insure that senior drivers should hang up their driver license? It is an interesting question.. Statistics show that new teenage drivers and senior (over 55) drivers are the major cause of accidents. Not shocking, but definitely shows that if we did not let the new teen drivers get experience – they would not get better at driving. What about the senior drivers that should stop – do you just not let them work through it?

As we get older stuff happens.

  • Our eye sight gets worse. I guess I was lucky, I did not need reading glasses till I was older than 50. Driving at night becomes more difficult – in fact, I bet if you drove around a senior community, most cars parked. Vision definitely gets impaired, but is correctable to some degree.
  • Injuries and body parts failing. I have already had one hip replacement. Good thing it has not really effected my range of motion, but it can. I see many senior folks, riding around in scooters to help them get around. Then I see them get into the driver side of their cars… Hum? If you can not walk without assistance, how are you going to work the pedals (gas and brake).
  • Medications.. I can say that my intake of meds is higher than at any point in my life (and it will probably get worse). Ever read the label of that come with the meds… Should you drive? I think they call that driving while impaired.
  • Reflexes.. I know for me – my reflexes are still good, but not like when I was in my 20′s or 30′s. When do I know when the reflexes have started to fail me?
  • Judgement.. As we get older we like to think we know more and are a better drivers. Hell, we have 30, 40, 50 years of driving under our belt. We have seen everything (as long as the eyesight is still good)!

There probably are more, but I think you get the point. There are many things that will happen over time.. When they all add up (or maybe just one of them) causes driving a vehicle to be dangerous for themselves and others – it is time to take the license away. Who does it?

  • DMV – well, they probably could put in a written, eye test and driver test again.. Much like we had when we first got our license. At what age do you make that call? 55? 65? 70? 80? I can hear the age discrimination claims a flying.
  • Doctors – Interesting.. They either have worked on your body, prescribed medications or know your full mental or physical capacity. Should they alert the DMV? At the very least have that conversation with their patient. Which they probably do…
  • Family members – for sure! Now that is an interesting conversation. Mom or Dad, we have been noticing that you are having an extremely difficult time getting around. We are concerned about your safety when you are in the car. I really think it is time for you to sell the car and turn in your driver’s license. I can just hear what my father would have said…
  • Driver them-self – probably should happen. Just a difficult thing to say and do. Losing your independence and freedom to come and go as you please.

There is no perfect solution to this problem. I just know that this problem is getting worse every year. As the population is living longer. Maybe a combination of all of the above should happen. Doctors need to be upfront and communicate to the patient and their families (enough of patient only information). When it comes to driving in a car – everyone can be a danger to themselves and others. Families need to have that difficult discussion and realize that their lives are going to change. For me, I had to drive my kids around before they were old enough to drive. I guess I will have to drive my family around when they get too old to drive themselves.

Az Government – Where To Begin…

Mar19

2 Comments Written by Steve

I have written only a few posts that really get me fired, but up not in a good way… This one is one of those that I really have had to craft very carefully. I am a very long standing Republican and have been normally a supporter of what the party stands for and most of their actions, but no longer. I have been struggling with the party for sometime now. I am completely fed up with the Republican party. There are two reasons that just have sent me over the edge. Immigration reform legislation introduced has shown a side that I do not want to be associated with. Flat out wrong for even thinking  this stuff. I have had a long standing argument about cutting education and now I have to say that all but one Republican voted to cut more cuts in education from the Republican governor’s proposed budget. I believe now is the time for some real change…

Do those Republicans have kids in Arizona public schools? Maybe some of them have grand-kids – are they in Arizona public schools? Do they really think that cutting education in Arizona is a good move? Have they read how well (or not well) the students in Arizona do in comparison with other states? We may not be dead last, but with continued cuts we can be guaranteed to get closer. What were they thinking? What are they thinking? Do we have to continue to see party affiliation be the death of true change?

Here is a thought? You want to cut education’s budget, fine how about cutting the salary of the newly elected Republicans to their political seats? How about the new Education Superintendent take a leadership role, much like other business leaders in times of crisis? Take a salary of $1 until things turn around. Let’s add all of the state elected “leadership” take a $1 salary until they turn around the budget..

Why continue to cut education? Simple answer – they all know we will not let bad things happen to our kids or grand kids. We will do whatever we must to make sure that they are taken care of. School District’s and cities will have no choice but to put up bond proposals or increase to taxes to help offset the funding cuts. Hell, it has been happening for quite some time. It will continue if the state does not get their collective act together. Here is what it looks to me – the federal government has failed to really make anything done in education work.. They love to pass it to the state’s to handle… Now the state of Arizona is failing to make anything done in education to work… So, let’s pass it to the school districts, cities and their communities to make it happen. What next?

  • Pass it onto the teachers?  Well, my wife the teacher gets paid less per hour than minimum wage. She uses that salary to help fund her classroom. I doubt we can squeeze more there.
  • Pass it onto the parents? I mean, 100% home schooling with no help or oversight by the state. Have one administrative person send out all testing necessary. The total cost will be close to nothing.. Stop and think for a minute what you envision the future to look like.
  • Make public school pay per instruction? Wait, that is almost like private school. What I mean is no funding for any school (public, private or charter) from any of the state’s funds. Many countries have close to that situation – how well is it working?
  • Get smart and really refund education? Tough task and one that needs to happen. Are our leaders today capable of handling that? I truly doubt it.. They have yet to demonstrate any real ability to change anything.

Anyone else fired up? Anyone else really sick and tired of what is happening? I have some actions that I am going to do..

  1. Changing my party affiliation to independent.. I can not continue to say I am a Republican – when I do not support the party…
  2. I will continue to be active in education (site council, volunteer in classroom).. I plan on getting more active – by attempting to get myself more involved where I can make some changes… School board, city council and maybe state government. It is time to really make change – I am sick and tired of hearing it and not seeing it..

How about you?

Sometimes Change Is NOT Good

Mar11

2 Comments Written by Steve

I guess because I am an older person, with many years and experiences under my belt, that I have seen a few things. Some of those things have changed and significantly over the years. The one that I want to write about today is just plain personal. I can remember from the very first time I went off to school – elementary school and the experience has carried me through my kids going through school and now since I volunteer a lot – I get to witness it daily (with other people’s children).  The title of the blog post is “Sometimes Change is NOT Good” for a reason. I know we need changes in our education system – I truly understand that.. But, the change I want to focus in on is teacher, student and parent. Why? Like I said, years of experience…

Let’s look at this relationship. We can all agree that it takes a village to raise the children. Especially, parents and teachers when it comes to education. Don’t forget the main ingredient – student (your kids). The relationship over time has changed significantly. Let’s look at my experience -

  • I went off to public school back in the mid to late 60′s and graduated in 1977. I know I am dating myself.. But that is okay. It is a frame a reference! I am not going to tell you I walked uphill in the snow both ways – we all know that is not true, but I did walk to school (and the winters were pretty cold – Canadian border upstate New York). Well, back to the topic; parent, student and teacher relationship. My parents taught me the teacher is right, always right. They are very important and you need to listen to them and do what they tell you. My parents attended all scheduled conferences and shared communications as needed. When I acted up or didn’t get along with a classmate, a call or note would go home – and I was 100% at fault, no questions asked. My parents would tell me, what is your side of the story.. Here was the trick I learned later on – they were baiting me to lie. Fact is they sided with the teacher 100%.  Back in that day, corporal punishment was allowed and I got my share (I liked to be the class clown).
  • Fast forward some to when my kids attended school, 80′s and 90′s. Times were changing some. Teachers we used to see get out and about (we did see them eat in public). They even shopped! I never knew that growing up.. When my wife and I used to discuss the importance of a very good education, we shared that the teacher is a very big part of your success. Listen, work hard and do what you are asked to – these were the important points. Along the way, we had some issues with how things were going. We never once attacked a teacher for anything. We would sit down and work out what needed to be done. I was lucky, my kids were gifted students - they set high goals for themselves and worked hard. Sometimes the school would only focus on working to the middle (or on getting students to passing). When my kids got their calls or notes for behavior issues – we sided with the teacher more times than not. Rarely did we take the stand for the kid. Did I bait my kids like my parents did? Some…
  • Fast forward again to the 2000 and 2010′s. I have seen an increasing number of challenging of the teachers on the simplest of things. Let’s go back to the behavior issues examples. I have witnessed an increased focus on the teacher as the cause of the behavioral issue. Not a complete 180 degree switch – but the first step is to agree with the child’s words. Which puts the parents on the offensive when meeting with the teacher. Upset parents coming to the aide of their kids… Making excuses or defending the behavior – it can not be my child that did it.. Why has it changed? Do we think that the 9, 10, 11 year old is right over the teacher?

Like I said, in my day, my parents accepted the teacher as gospel. When my kids went through school, I was definitely more supportive of the teacher. I can only remember one time – that it was definitely not my child that was at fault, but was there – guilty by association (make a better choice). Watching what I am seeing today scares me. Maybe it was me not being like my parents – 100% support of the teacher no matter what.. Helped to pave the way to what I see today.. I hope not. The village has to raise the kids – it is time for the kids not to raise part of the village. Sorry, but if you are a parent that supports your child 100% over the teacher in all matters, ask yourself one simple question. “What does the teacher gain from what you just heard from your child?” I think that will help put into perspective who has something to gain…. Working together for the best for the child’s future.

Observations That Just Get Me Fired Up!

Today, I have noticed more than a few items that just fire me up. Well, maybe it has been coming for awhile. Not sure if I am being too sensitive (Wait, me sensitive? N0 way!) Here are some of those things:

• Telemarketing calls – right at dinner time (well anytime for that matter). We had the do not call list – and that maybe has slowed some of the calls – but, not all. The only enjoyment I get out of those calls – are asking them to hold while I place the phone down and finish eating.
• Mean people – why not smile? I have been told that it takes less muscles to smile than to frown. Be happy – well, try anyways.
• Celebrity arrests and the stupid comments afterwards. We also could put the train wreck called Charlie Sheen in this one.. Not arrested but some pretty stupid comments. Too much airtime! #winning (not)
• Getting back to the office from lunch to see the cleaning sign across the door. Why right after lunch?
• Annoying cell phone ring tones, especially in the office area. Use the vibrate mode – please! This one and many other ones like it – were the inspiration for Cube Farm Etiquette and Violations.
• Cell phone talking drivers – what more is needed to be said here. I am not saying that we should not multi-task, but if you are going to use your cell phone – use a hands free device. Frankly, your multi-tasking skills are not that good.
• Sending out anything (job application, email or whatever) that just seems to fall in the black hole of cyberspace. Follow-up when follow-up is necessary!

Do you have any to that fire you up?

World Gone Crazy

I don’t often want to write about what is happening around the political arena or close to that space. My opinions and views on this topic are mine. Sharing is not necessarily a good thing, in my opinion. I vote! I do want to express my views on what happened this past weekend and the overall coverage that has been given to the events on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. After shootings the media so often focuses and make famous the shooter. There has been way too much press and attention given to this very disturbed person. Too much speculation on “why” he did it. Too much talk on arm-chair parenting from many experts.

What happens when we spend all that time on that disturb person?

  • Other disturbed people could see this as a way for them to seize an opportunity. Stop the beyond 15 minutes of fame for those that do not deserve it! We don’t want any copy-cats…
  • We try to put answers to questions we can not answer. Why? Do these so called experts really know why? We have gone through the political, mental and back again. Do we really need to spend all that time getting into his head? Anyone ask him?
  • Those why assumptions – have helped to focus on many items (as misguided as they may seem). In my opinion, some of those are good and bad. Having folks jump all over Sarah Palin for her comments in the past – not so good – too self-serving to drag others into it. Our political rhetoric and fighting going on today – seems a good place to put blame if you have to.
  • We give only a small amount of time to the victims of that act. Sure the congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords and Judge John Roll have gotten more than the others (Christina Taylor Green, Gabe Zimmerman, Dorwin Stoddard, Dorthy Murray and Phyliss Scheck) but overall they should be who we really hear about. All of them!

Red flags after the fact can be and are being pointed to. When you are in the moment, do you really “see” those signs? What would be better is to truly communicate to the public all (not just this persons) of the red flags that may help you “as a parent, family member or friend” can use to help you “see” the early warning signs of trouble.

Let’s stop with the focus on the disturbed person behind the attack. A little more focus on those victims and focus on not having this happen again… Please!

New Year, New Beginning

Well, the day is here! That first Monday of the new year. This first Monday is even more special, it is my last day of my 28+ year career at Intel. I have been communicating in my blog from time to time on this day coming. My thoughts on should I retire or not, a list of some of the folks that made my time special at Intel and my last internal blog post. I have had a retirement party or two… Got time to talk old war stories with many of the folks that were with me on my journey the past 28 years. We looked back and laughed! We reviewed the good times and some of the “not so” good times. The fact over the past months of making my decision, I was still going into the office the next day. That is not true today. This is the last day!I will be riding an emotional roller coaster today!

This was not an easy decision to make, but I know I made the right decision. My wife asked me this morning, “how you feeling?” My simple answer was, “pretty strange.”

  • I am excited about what the next journey will bring. A little scared at the same time!
  • I am happy for all of the people I have met over those 28 years. A little sadden by the fact, that I know I will not get to see some of them in the future.
  • I am happy that I will not be sitting in a gray 6×8 “veal pen” or better known as a cubicle. A little sadden by the fact, that I have to empty out that cubicle – looking at those memories one last time.
  • I am not looking forward to saying “good-bye” to folks.

Well, I guess I better get to it! One last drive, one last time parking the car, one last time walking in with an employee badge on, getting that last “free” soda – I think you get the point!

Bored? SPAM Review

Dec28

Leave a Comment Written by Steve

Over the past two weeks, I have been hit with a big dose of email SPAM… So much that I want to share.  Started out this morning with a clean inbox and within the next 4 hours I got over 30 SPAM emails. I have no reference to is that a lot or not. To me – it sucks.

So, lets take a look at the wonderful SPAM that I have gotten:

  • eCard from someone I don’t know and am to afraid to open it! Nothing good can come from reviewing that eCard.
  • Education Grants for those that qualify – I am afraid that I really don’t want to get another degree and I have a pretty good idea that I don’t qualify. Thanks for caring about my education, but I am not in the market.
  • Latoya wants me to become a nursing assistant. Not sure who Latoya is. I really have not given my second career a thought about nursing or a nursing assistant.
  • iRenew Bracelet – Got 2 of those in about the span of 10 mins. I guess I need one of those bracelets bad!
  • Accutane Warning – Never had acne, so I guess I probably don’t qualify for that either.
  • Term Life Insurance – Prudential Financial Company  and American General. Really not looking to add additional life insurance to my expenditures at this time or anytime in the future.
  • Facebook Survey – They want my opinion and are offering a free gift.  I’ll pass!
  • Approval Department – they have my holiday cash waiting for me.  Well, beeduck.com thanks for offering $1000, but I just don’t want to click the link.
  • Avandia Settlement – So, the US Senate Panel is investigating Avandia diabetes drug maker. Thanks for the heads up, but I don’t have diabetes. Plus, I think that you can get the name of everyone that has used the diabetes drug rather than SPAMing me.
  • Opportunity is knocking with a sledgehammer from Print Money System. I am always looking for a good opportunity but not with a sledgehammer or something called Print Money. Just afraid that it all my be a bit too much.
  • Credit Score Alerts… Well, there are so many of them that I just don’t want to list them all. Enough already. I have a monitor on my credit score already. Leave me alone.
  • Cars Sales.. Got a couple.. Year End Clearance of 2010 from Auto Dealer and SUV’s from Anne. I know we all need to push that inventory of 2010′s because soon the 2012′s will be out. Need room on the lots. I’ll pass.
  • UNUM Policy Denials – was my UNUM claim denied? Don’t have UNUM, never put in a claim, don’t know what this is.. Move on..
  • I can conquer the language barrier in 10 days from Language Learning. I don’t have a language barrier.. Others may have one with me, but I am fine.
  • Drowning in Debt? FileConsumerBankruptcy is here to help. Don’t need that yet! Hope to never need it.. Worked hard all my life not to need it.
  • Electronic Cigarettes wants me to take up smoking. I do love a good cigar from time to time! I have a lot of electronic gadgets!  This is one I don’t think I need.
  • DirectBuyAlerts keeps trying to get me to come in and win $50k home make-over. I get one of these every hour on the hour.
  • USA Honor Society wants to recognize me! Thanks for the honor, but I really don’t deserve it!
  • Big Settlements for Foramax users. Another drug gone bad… Not one that I have taken. Don’t they have records for users? Leave me out of it!
  • Millionaire Society has heard I want to be a millionaire! Don’t we all? I really am not a get rich quick kind of person. I want to work hard for it – for a long time. Keeps me busy that way.
  • Hip Replacement settlement – I know I had a hip replacement a couple of years ago. My doctor has already informed me that I hip is not the one in question. Again, I know there must be records of who has what – use that first.

That is a snap shot of what was in the SPAM folder… Seems like if I want someone to give me something for nothing – I just need to look in the SPAM folder – there are plenty of options. If I have taken any drug or had any surgery – there will be a lawsuit waiting in your inbox.. Selling with email SPAM – does it really work? Not from me.. This time of day, I was missing all of the dating emails… I guess that is the late night emails. For now, I just keep getting them – empty my folder about 2x per day and laugh from time to time!

Need For Better Safety Precautions

Dec08
2010
Leave a Comment Written by Steve

I for one am not big on having our government in our daily lives, but maybe we have to. Over the past month, when I am driving around – I have been observing and taking mental notes. Some of the things I have witnessed are -

  • 3 out 5 female drivers are driving around on their cellphones glued to their ears.
  • 2 out 5 male drivers have one finger stuck in their nose while driving around.
  • Putting on make-up has become a sport while driving.
  • Over 80% of observed city (any city) workers are have cellphone in their ear while driving around.
  • Still I hear on the news of yet another youngest falling in the backyard pool.

What is happening out there? Are we too distracted to follow some basic safety rules? Do we think nothing will happen to us? I wish we would step up and make some necessary changes to improve safety for all folks.

  1. Every city employee must use blue-tooth or headset technologies while driving in city vehicles. No law needed, just a mandate by the city to insure that their investment in their folks is insured some. The added bonus is the rest of us, can drive about more safely. Some of those city vehicles are a bit large and require two hands to drive safely.
  2. A law needs to be put in place for hands free driving. When I go to CA, they have that law. I forget at first, but after a quick look around, I remember. Has this made the streets and highways in CA any safer? Depending on who you read or listen too – the opinion is mixed. I say, let’s err on the side of caution first. Make hands free a reality in AZ.
  3. Personal hygiene must stay in the house (or the workplace bathroom). Let’s face it – we are busy and in a rush all the time! Putting on your make-up or shaving while driving is probably worse than the cellphone. Focus on the road!
  4. Watching our children is something that we as parents are supposed to do. All the time! Everywhere! Especially when there is water around. It turns my stomach to hear about a youngest that has fallen in the family pool. We must insure that they are safe.

I know I am not alone with many of these items. I really think it is time for personal ownership and social responsibility to kick in here. We must add safety into our daily lives. The life that maybe saved – could be yours.

Auto Industry – Time to Update Your Workflow

Oct26
2010
Leave a Comment Written by Steve

My family and I have been looking to purchase a new vehicle. The point of this post is really ask that folks in the auto industry to get their collective stuff together when it comes to purchasing an automobile. In this day and age, why is it so difficult? Why has there not been any real changes to the experience from a buyers standpoint (my vantage point)? Why are dealers doing business about the same?

The golden age of car buying (pre-internet) is only slightly different with the internet. The internet gives the buyer and seller an opportunity to be totally informed.

Workflow Improvements.. My humble opinion!

  • Research on vehicle cost and inventory at dealers – definitely saves time with calling or driving around the city. Problem is the only way to get realinformation is to give an email and phone number… Then watch as your phone starts ringing off the hook. Some folks give a partial phone number to deal with the email along. Process improvement – give complete and updated information on your website. You all know what we are asking for – give it complete the first time. If you have dealer incentives – list them after the price. Get to the bottom line (what you the dealer needs to get for a price).
  • We get to compare vehicles across brands and read reviews. This is helpful to me.. Comparing helps me get a much better idea of vehicle to vehicle differences from a far. Reviews are not always helpful, but they are a reference point. Process improvement – give me a purchase button.. I think I have a very strong intention that I want to purchase – why can’t I give you my strong intention?
  • With that purchase button – I can get the next level of details… Like if I had a trade in. Trade in Values – there are many websites that can get you a picture of the value of your trade… Problem is I have found no dealer that honors that price – even with dropping a level on the status of the trade. Process improvement – give the person what you would normally do with a sight unseen trade (telling them that the trade value is only a measuring stick – if the trade is in better shape – you could see an additional trade value).
  • Move onto financing. Not everyone can just walk in an write a check.. Financing should not be that difficult. Process improvementis keeping your financial details up to date. Pre-qualify the buyer on-line. This helps you to make sure that the deal can be finalized quickly. It also lets the buyer know if they are looking at too much car for their budget.
  • Lastly, the purchase. You have all the necessary information on the cost, your trades rough estimate on value, you know what you pre-qual for on the loan… This should help the buyer understand almost everything to make a decision. Problemtoday is that a game seems to be played (or at least that is what it seems to be like).  The dealer has not wasted any one’s time. They have a strong interested buyer that is pre-qual and well armed with what is going on. Process improvement – set up a scheduling system with the purchase – so, that one person gets to work with the customer. Test drive… Okay, let’s get it done. Close on the trade.. Close on the loan or cash.. Everyone should be happy.

I think the process all falls apart today at the time of purchase. Buyers want to get their best deal. Sellers what to get their best deal. The win/win is not always in the picture. Look at today’s purchase and if you have done as many as I have – over 30 years – it goes like this:

  • Seller brings you into the office to get information.. All of that would be electronic with the improvements.
  • Seller assess the trade in. That would be the same as it is today. But, the buyer has what he hopes is the lowest number. He will be armed with the value from the websites. And then it is just agree on what the value is.
  • Seller starts off with the price of the vehicle you want to purchase, the doc fees, dealer extras and taxes.. Plugs in your trade value. Shows what the over cost is going to be. With the improvements – all of the “hidden fees” would be public (doc fees, taxes and dealer extras). The only change would be the updated trade value.
  • Buyer reviews the data and then the negotiations begin. Seller asks you for what you think and the give and take happens. This could go on for 3 trips.. the last one, is usually some manager that you have not worked with that comes out to “close” the deal. With the new process – that goes away.
  • Buyer purchases.. And then goes through the loan, documentation process and pays… The new process – all information is ready to go – and if the backend is set up correctly – not much else is needed. Just print and sign.. Done.

We all know that someday purchasing a vehicle will get easier to do. The dealers that see how to really make changes to the buyer experience – will get the bulk of the business. They may not make as much per transaction – but they definitely will have more transactions and less overhead – hence making more money!

Auto industry, please set into the on-line buying world. What you have today – is a failed attempt at it.

Can We Add to the “Do Not Call”?

Aug30
2010
Leave a Comment Written by Steve

Remember the Do Not Call Improvement Act in 2007, that later became law in Feb. 2008? How can we get some more of those annoying calls that we do not want added to that list?

The annoying calls that I am writing about at the wonderful political calls that are robo called to us around election time. The cheap and easy way to reach out to voters. When do they normally happen? Around dinner time or slightly after.. You know the time that you are supposed to be spending family time together. Interrupt family time! The topic of discussion switches over to the call and the purpose of the call, but not in a good way (usually a simple no way am I voting for “that” person!). How can we get those added to that law? Wait, that would probably mean that those exact folks that approved the list for those sales calls – would have to put their own campaigns on the list. Let’s not hold our breathe waiting for that to happen.

For our household, we are a house divided. So, we get to get both parties lovely phone calls. After keeping track of who called, who called for whom and which party called.. The loser party with the most calls were the Republicans. Senate John McCain topped the overall list – his voice was on my answering machine three times. Since this is computerized – did you really have to call me three times? I have to seriously revisit the party that I follow. In an earlier post, I commented that I was not going to vote for anyone that called or had some call with their support on a candidate. I lived up to my promise. I did not vote for any of those folks.

When will some of our law-makers step up and put an end to that behavior?
