Stand or Not

Wow… By now just about everyone has heard about Kaepernick’s stance on not standing for the national anthem. You can read more of Kaepernick’s controversial comments here. For those that have missed it, he has been doing this on every pre-season game this season. Took the world to notice on the 3rd game. And he will continue to sit until he believes there is progress in the police killings and follow-up on punishment.

At first, I was how dare anyone disrespect the national anthem and standing and honoring our flag. I know I would never do that. I have been taught to honor the national anthem and flag as a symbol of respect for my country, my fellow Americans, my family, the many servicemen and women that have served to protect our freedoms and respect for myself.

After really looking at everything. Because of the freedoms that we yell out and many other countries citizens come to live here – he has the right to say and sit during the national anthem. First amendment give us that right. He is not hurting anyone! He has stated why. He believes strongly. He has started a firestorm.

Discussion on his sitting, should be more on why he is sitting. I don’t fully understand the why’s and what outcome should happen to address and fix it. I have not walked a mile in those shoes. I have not lived in or around any of what is going on. That does not mean that I don’t think there is a problem. There is! Is it racism? Bad people in positions that should not be there?

Opening up a discussion on the root problem… That is the first step. Problem is most people can’t get over the sitting stance.

I can safely say from my side. Everyone has the right to protest. That does not mean that I will support that protest. Part of me believes that Kaepernick really put himself out there. What he did, I do not condone. But, because of our country freedoms – he can do it. I wish he would have chose some why different.
