Message Is Stale And Moldy

Run into a coach that has been doing it for a really long time? Does the same message over and over again 29100172_sseem to get stale? Ever sit in a room watching the reactions to a managers message given? Watch at the end of every sports season – just pick anyone of them – coaches get fired all the time. Most of the time the reason given is their message had gotten stale, lost the room or the players quit on the coach. They all have the same thing – the coaches message was not working.

Like sports, the business world is much the same. Winning is important. If you team is not meeting their expectations – changes will happen. With sports, the players rarely are sent packing – it is the coach. In many business situations it is much the same. An organization or business unit that is under-performing you can count on the leader at the top is going to be replaced.

I was sitting in on a meeting the other day and was watching the reaction to the manager giving what he thought was going to help his employees. It was a message that was sent with many mixed signals. Classic lesson in what not to do when trying to motivate your employees. It was my first time receiving this message, so I listened and watched the reaction of the others in the room. It became clear to me by the reaction of many that this was not the first time they have heard the message given. Many tuned out or just did not care. I am not wired that way.

Everyone wants to be on a winning team in business or in sport. As the leader, it is your biggest challenge to insure that your team is winning and continuing to grow. If you can’t do that – then you could be replaced for someone else. Everything is performance based. How are we doing to last year’s performance indicators? We have to grow and improve. As the leader your message needs to resonate with your folks. You have to grow with your team. If that message is stale, your folks will be the first ones to know. You have to change with the people on your team! I know this next item is going to sound like a broken record… We cannot motivate and lead everyone the same way. Every person is different… You better make sure that you understand that and adapt your leadership style to insure you will be successful.
