Time For Real Change

39783027_sChange is good! Change can be just what you need. Many folks would like to see stuff stay the same old way, forever. Change happens. Sit back and think for a moment when you were little and growing up to where you are now. For me that is a long journey! Some changes have been outstanding and some not so much. It is time for some serious changes… Tweaks don’t really help change, it may help in the short term, but in the long term the overall success will be missing.

Grab a topic…

Education: I wrote about the recent AZ repeal of the Common Core standards. What is coming? Well, from those that are in charge they feel some tweaks are in order. Following those standards was not good in their view for our AZ children. Many folks commented that we need to go back to what they learned in their day. If it was good enough for them, it is good enough for today. Both approaches to me are just simple modifications that will not direct a real change in how things are done. Change has to happen in order for the future of our world to be a better place. Not educating our children for the future is going to hurt us down the road.

Youth Sports:  Here is an area that I wish would have major reform. As a player, coach, official and board member throughout my life we need change. Are many of the kids in youth sports today going to make it too the pros? It seems that parents are using sports as the ticket for a great future for their kids. When I was playing I wanted to be a pro baseball player… How many make it every year? Out of how many that participate? Sports are a great tool for helping to develop our youth in the ways of physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship and working hard to achieve goals. When the actions of parents, coaches and officials take away from that – which we get to see everyday – change is necessary.

Social Media:  Everyone is a critic. Social media gives everyone the platform to say whatever they want. Good, bad and the ugly. Just because you can say it, you have to stop and ask yourself, “should you say it?” I really enjoy what Herm Edwards, ESPN commentator, says about social media, don’t hit send! At least not right away. Come back and reread it once you have time to think. I would request a platform coding change like… Once you hit send – the platform asks you – do you really want to send? Add an ignore button to stop the negativity. Look I enjoy using social media. I have reconnected to folks from high school, college and so on. It has made the world a smaller place. All good things, but it does give a platform to everyone…

BTW – This post sat in my draft and was rewritten 3 times before I published. Pulled the trigger anyways.

Political Correctness!  The only change needed here is to get rid of this. Nothing more needs to be said on this topic…

Over our thanksgiving weekend – we had some discussions on a lot of topics. Where is a good starting point for a true change. There are two basic principles that will start to bring along change.

  • A return of personal responsibility and accountability. No more blaming it on someone else. Look you did it! You have a choice.. Do not pass on to others when you don’t like the outcome. Stand up and take responsibility for your actions (or lack of action).
  • No more entitlements. When did most people feel entitled to have stuff or be given something? What ever happened to working hard for what you have? No more handouts. If you earned it – you should get it. This goes for all veteran benefits. You put your life on the line – you should get what you earned. If you need assistance due to rough times – you should have to earn it. Helping out others… No free rides…

Rant over…
