Welcome Back

20581518_sI suspended my Retired Guy series due to me coming out of retirement recently. I started my new job as NOC supervisor for Phoenix NAP on May 19th. I am truly excited with the opportunity.

Follies leading up to my first day:

We have a standing rule that everyone’s first day is important. It was always the first day of the new school year for my kids and my wife. I had not had a true first day in a very long time. We have a ritual that we always go out and get a new set of clothes. First impressions are lasting impressions. Have to look good and you will feel good. The day before May 19th, I reviewed everything that I needed to bring with me from Phoenix NAP. Identification – you can use your passport or have two additional sets of ID. I figured one ID is better than two. Pulled out the passport to find out that it had expired on May 3, 2014. Ouch! I guess I better locate either my birth certificate or social security card. Double Ouch! I really don’t have those. I go armed with my expired passport, hoping that will work. NOT. I have to go to the locate social security office to get a replacement card.

The Week in Review:

I have not had many first weeks before, this one has gone smooth. Getting access… Getting your desk… Getting your accounts… Getting to know your way around (bathrooms, cafe, your work area to name a few) and getting trained. I have heard the term drinking from the fire hose, well I know have a true feeling for that term. I have lots to learn! I have lots to do! This first week has been an experience that I doubt I would trade for anything. Expectations are high. Results are needed now rather than later. I would have it no other way.

The only follies that I can share during the first week have all centered on the bio metric time clock. Come in the morning and use your number, place your hand on the scanner and you are “punched” in. When you leave that day, you have to do this all over the again. Well, I have not been too successful at remember to “punch in or out.” I need a better reminder! I walk by scanner all day long. You would think I could remember when I come in or leave for the day – to use it. I better come up with a better reminder, or my manager is going to have a fit with me sending in my hours for approval.

Looking forward to week two!
